In Bulgaria today we celebrate Palm Sunday, in honour of the flowers (me included) I am taking you on a garden worthy tour to Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild, located at Saint- Jean – Cap- Ferrat on the French Riviera. 

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LOCK A TRAVELLER AT HOME

Since travelling is a mirage, right now, we can still travel through memories.

It’s powerful to me, that I can put an experience down in words like I am trapping it in a jar and it can never really leave me.

HISTORY

The Rothschild villa is the definition of heritage luxury. Built between 1905 – 1912 by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild and used as a residence and party villa until her death, after that donated to Institute de France. And nowadays used as a fine art museum.

The story goes that the Baroness fired and hired at least ten architects during the SEVEN–year building period. She had a very eccentric, yet unique taste and filled the mansion with over 5,000 antiques – exquisite paintings, sculptures and collections of rare porcelain.

From “Ile de France” , one can see the sea on either side, no wonder Béatrice was inspired and named the Villa after a boat.

The moment, I entered the pink-coloured Villa, I wished I was dress accordingly to match the scene.

The furniture has a very antique ambience, there are items belonging to Marie Antoinette and French kings (originally used in Versailles)

On the first floor, was the previously mentioned collections of porcelain and dining room.

Stepping into the house is like stepping back in time.

There was a quiet elegance, a hushed quality. The museum is open for all.

It houses some truly unique artefacts, most of which are quite priceless.

The variety of human creativity, expressed in landscaping, is a pleasure for the eyes. (included in the Remarkable Gardens of France).

The breathtaking park has nine theme gardens. (The Spanish garden, The Florentine garden, The Stone Garden, The Japanese garden, The Exotic garden, The Rose garden, The Provencal garden, The French garden and The Sèvres Garden)

The Exotic garden also known as The Mexican garden is the kingdom of cacti of all parts of the world.

The air smelled as roses and I knew that I have reached my destination. I was in the Rose garden. Home of hundred varieties of roses, one of them is named after the Baroness.

HIGH MAINTENANCE OF THE GARDENS

The plants should be dead-headed daily, for tidy appearance, more than 30 gardeners used to maintain the garden, dressed as sailors with berets with red pom-poms.

On the east side of the villa is the Sèvres Garden, which has large porcelain pots and offering a romantic afternoon in the tearoom.

The property has witnessed world events, hosted the biggest names in the world, and offered some of the best dining experiences. To add to the fairytale feels, there are musical fountains, every 20 minutes they put on a show for us with classical music.

All the colours are exactly the way, they are suppose to be: green and neat garden beds, perfect skies and white clouds. Just as a painter may draw them.
