Koh Samui – the blissful island that has so much to offer

Everything starts with the Koh Samui Airport. Believe me, when I say this, I have never ever seen a more fascinating airport in my entire life. By far the most beautiful one.

This blog post is entirely inspired by the list of places I mapped down for my good friend Yoanna and the thought that some of you, would be interested to know where I ate, what I did and what I saw in my trip to Koh Samui.

I recently came across the quote of Alain de Button that I agree with on 100% :

“The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destinations we travel to”

I need to give you some background information about me. I used to live in Thailand, in Bangkok approximately 5 years ago. It was my first modelling experience in Asia. I remember I was in my last year of finishing university. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep for a month.

Thailand back then wasn’t the top travel destinations and not many foreigners were living there.

With this being said, I had some expectations of Koh Samui as well.

Everything starts with the Koh Samui Airport. Believe me, when I say this, I have never ever seen a more fascinating airport in my entire life. By far the most beautiful one.

From the plane, they pick you up with a special sightseeing cart reminding me of those golf carts. The moment I got on the cart I felt I landed in a tropical paradise. And this is not far from reality.

The weather in early November was pleasant despite the monsoon season. (rainy season September – November)

I am one of the few psychopaths that perceive their vacations as a way to get in tune with my body and take care of myself, think of a Bootcamp – I like to get up early, eat healthy food, exercise and explore new activities.

Let’s talk about the gym. I signed for a week pass at Koh Fit. Not to be confused with FIt Koh which my friend Sammy mentioned is another outdoor gym that I haven’t tried.

Koh Fit is a very clean gym with a pool and outdoor area for CrossFit. The cute thing about Koh Samui was that during my stay there I got to know many people very quickly. The gym was full of foreigners that would engage in HIIT or yoga.

HEALTHY FOOD

Everything starts and ends with Vikasa Yoga Cafe or how I like to call it “Views + Food”. After a killing workout in the gym, the best breakfast buffet was at Vikasa.

The menu was different every day. From eggs and superfood muesli to vegan gluten-free waffles. There is definitely anything your soul might crave.

And with the stunning ocean view, one really feels in paradise. My home for a week was located in a quiet area, offering a getaway from daily life, yet close enough to reach dining spots by car.

It took me two to three days before I start relaxing and adapting to the slower pace of life.

Another place on my list is We Green Farm and Restaurant.

From the name, you know it. There is a farm where we actually bought fresh mint from the garden. The place became one of my favourites, because of the mouthwatering dishes.

Including international, as well as Thai recipes. For the first time, I tried there baby jackfruit juice. I was very shocked by the taste (close to grapefruit) and the red colour.

I was perplexed if the staff understood my order right. Jackfruit is yellow and has a very sweet taste. So apparently baby jackfruit looks completely different than jackfruit. Thanks, Google!

Intercontinental Beach bar – the perfect place for the sunset, which is around 5.30-6.30 pm I hardly can describe it with words, so I will leave the photo here. The place, where I got the only alcoholic drink for the whole trip. A pina colada. It was great, no complaints.

One of the last days, we decided to try a place recommended by the yoga teachers at Vikasa. The suggestion was The Secret Brunch. The food was healthy, yet tasty. Packed with nutritious ingredients, including superfoods, produced organically where possible.

The thing, I love the most is that they have a real coffee machine compared to the other places we visited with instant coffee.

Almond matcha latte with a cinnamon stick

Wild Tribe – is by far one of my top favourites. It’s an entire outdoor area with wooden tables. They have vegan raw desserts to die for, “sexy salads” and the almond matcha latte was bigger than my palm and I swear by this – the best acai superfood bowls on the island.

Between looking for the next healthy spot and the countless hours of yoga, we tried Singing bowl meditation! The Singing bowls produce sound, which invokes a deep state of relaxation. They are used for meditation, stress reduction, holistic healing, Reiki, chakra balancing.

The whole experience lasted for 1 hour. Some people were able to fall asleep. I experienced a deep sense of tranquillity and inner harmony. I really recommend you to go and see all the beautiful sunsets, try all the delicious food and have your own experience. It’s a really magical place
